Edward Hamlyn Adams was a West India merchant, banker and slave trader, born in Jamaica, whose family had settled in Barbados in the 17th century. In 1831 he was elected High Sheriff of Carmarthenshire then, 1833-34, the county's MP. His portrait in coloured wax, also by Morison, is in the Victoria and Albert Museum (A.17-1970), with further wax portraits of his two sons. Morison advertised himself as 'Modeller to the Royal Family' (cf. Pyke, E. J., A Biographical Dictionary of Wax Modellers, Oxford, 1973, pp. 94-5; Gunnis, R. Dictionary of British Sculptors, London 1951, p. 265.
