Lytras and Wilhelm Pittner, Victory seated with rising phoenix, Acropolis in distance, rev. Greek legend in four lines, ΔΙΕΘΝΕΙΣ ΟΛΥΜΠΙΑΚΟΙ ΑΓΩΝΕΣ ΑΘΗΝΗ'ΣΙ 1896, 50mm. (Gadoury/Vescovi 42.2; Wurzbach 410), in its original card case of issue (on which hand-written details), extremely fine, sharp and exceptionally rare in case
The note on the case reads: Olympic Games in honour of 'Zeus' started at Athens in 1896 & was called Olympian, being held every 4 years.... This medal was the first struck for the AD years....
