In 1943 the educated Sudanese, mostly alumni of the Gordon Memorial College, Khartoum, led by Ismāʿīl al-Azharī (1900-1969), formed the Graduates' General Congress as a voice to express grievances against both Britain and Egypt. The unrest caused the army to ban political rallies but they continued under the guise of the Athletic Club meetings. This medal was awarded at just such a rally.
