An excellent Kuba Prestige blade (ikula) from the D.R.Congo, ca. late 19th -early 20th century. The blade is 14? long, 3-3/4? wide and is topped by an elaborately carved wood handle. In excellent condition, uncleaned, with encrusted, darkened, shiny, aged patina on handle. These blades were a form of currency for dowries and other important transactions, especially prior to the introduction of European currencies in Central Africa. Ex New England collection, 1970's.
