Signed by George W. Hatch, ABNC President from 1863 to 1866 at bottom right. Just below Hatch's signature, well known engraver, and Treasurer, Neziah Wright signed the Treasurer's Panel. William R. Bliss hand-signed the Secretary Panel. The piece's historical significance ties into the Numismatic hobby since Wright, and Hatch who both signed this certificate were two of the four original owners of Rawdon, Wright, Hatch & Edson - the first firm contracted to design and produce US Stamps by the government. They set the bar for quality and beauty in Stamp production. A merger with 7 other printing firms including Toppan, Carpenter & Co occurred in 1858, forming the American Bank Note Company. At the time of the consolidation, RWH&E held the largest share or the company at just below 24%. (23.9%)
Ornate black and orange-red borders adorn the margins of the piece, while at center a striking seated allegorical figure rests with an eagle draped in the flag on her arm. Behind them is a big bright orange-red shield with a sunburst like shadow emerging from behind the central vignette.
Most known examples are plagued by severe water staining, and hole cancellations. This example is free of all of this netting defects, and shows with only mild circulation. This marvelous survivor piece hails from the estate of a deceased ABNC employee.
Estimate: $12000.00- $15000.00
