CHINA. Gold 10 Tael Ingot, ND (ca. 1750). EXTREMELY FINE.
367.27 gms. "Yuan Ji" (private bank name) at center, "Treasure" at either end, bottom stamped twice. Pedigreed to the "Nanking Cargo Wreck". The Dutch merchant ship VOC Retouschip Geldermalsen - built in 1742 - foundered on a coral reef in the South China Sea in 1752, killing 80 of the crew with only 32 surviving. A total of over 800 thousand Gulden in commodities was lost; 147 10 Tael gold bars, over 100,000 pieces of Chinese blue and white porcelain as well as tea, spices, textiles, lacquer wares and other trade goods. The wreck was recovered in 1986 by English divers and auctioned later that year by Christie's Amsterdam. This piece includes the original Christie's box lot numbered 1852.
