According to Xin Shimin, Liu Jingyang and Wang Zengxiang authors of "福建歷代貨幣匯編" (Fújiàn lìdài huòbì huìbiān [Fujian Historical Currency Compilation]) published Fuzhou 1998 state that a small amount of these patterns were struck at the Hongshanqiao mint and submitted to the provincial government for review. Unfortunately, since the design lacks an obvious designated denomination they were rejected as the local government thought they would be inconvenient for the market place. The design was slightly altered by removing the parallel lines from the center of the reverse in favor of "10" and the bottom portion of the legend was altered to read "每十枚當一圓" (Měi shí qiú dāng yī yuán[Every 10 is equal to 1 Dollar]). They go on to state that only a few examples are known of this extremely rare pattern.
