CHINA. Yunnan. Rupee, ND (1907). PCGS Genuine--Mount Removed, EF Details Gold Shield.
L&M-427; Wenchao-pg. 512#830 (rarity five stars). This EXTREMELY RARE type is clearly modeled after the Szechuen Tibet Rupee series. Although similar in appearance, various modifications have been made to the design. These include some stylistic changes and the addition of the English legends "YUN-NAN PROVINCE" and "SILVER COIN". The obverse depicts a left facing profile portrait of the emperor "Guang Xu", however some accounts claim it to bear the likeness of Yunnan governor "Cen Yuying". This type initially was intended to counter the influx of British Indian Rupees entering circulation within the region. However, it was minted on a limited trial basis and never reached full production. For this reason examples are seldom encountered today. Coin shows even wear and gray toning, with mount removal evident on obverse portrait. The damage has pebbled the surface and darkened and is isolated to the affected area without distorting any other areas. Despite the noted defects a presentable example of this highly sought after Yunnan rarity.

Estimate: $15000.00- $20000.00
