NETHERLANDS EAST INDIES. Sumatra-British United East India Company. Copper 3 Kepings Pattern, AH 1202 (1787). Soho Mint. NGC PROOF-65 BN.
S-963c; KM-Pn12; Prid-23c. Oblique edge. When Matthew Boulton applied steam power to his minting equipment he revolutionized the art and manufacture of coining. Pridmore states that in the early days of the Soho mint, Boulton liked to give out proofs and patterns of projects already in the works to interested parties as samples or advertisement pieces. He goes on to state that it is not possible to determine what patterns of the Sumatra series are genuine patterns or specially prepared advertisement pieces. The designs for the Sumatra series had been established in 1783 and was faithfully followed until they were redesigned in 1804. Finally, Pridmore states "It is quite probable that all the 'Patterns' now listed belong to the category of 'advertisement' and were produced according to Boulton's whim or fancy". Whatever the reason for the creation of these patterns they are certainly VERY RARE and highly sought after. Exhibiting a crisp strike with clearly defined intricate details and hard reflective surfaces displaying an attractive medium brown patina accentuated by hues of magenta amongst the devices and blue in the open fields. Quite an attractive example sure to be a welcome addition to the next collection it enters.

Estimate: $5000.00- $6000.00
