TIMOR. Pataca, ND (1900). PCGS Genuine--Scratch, AU Details; C/M: AU Details.
KM-8 (for basic type); Gomes-01.07 (for date only); Vaz-TI.04 (for date only). Cross of Christ countermark (authorized by Decree of 13 June 1900) on a Mexico 1894-Ga JS 8 Reales. On a sharper host with a more deeply impressed counterstamp than is usual. Attractive overall with moderate tone and a number of old scratches beneath the eagle's right wing that have now toned over. RARE and seldom offered.

The Cross of Christ is the insignia of the Order of Our Lord Jesus Christ established in Portugal in the fourteenth century and is the symbol of Portuguese discoveries overseas. Due to a large influx of counterfeit coins entering the colony, the local government was forced to take steps to fight against them by applying the Cross of Christ to all accepted genuine pieces. This mark is only known on Mexican "Cap & Rays" 8 Reales.

Estimate: $900.00- $1200.00
