Anthony Fen Kemp (1773-1868) soldier and merchant. In July 1793 he was commissioned ensign in the New South Wales Corps and arrived in Sydney with a detachment of the Regiment two years later. He received permission to settle in Van Diemen's Land in 1815 and moved there in January 1816. Kemp established the firm of Kemp & Gatehouse which was later changed to Kemp & Co when Richard Barker was taken into partnership. When the partnership dissolved in 1829 Kemp continued the shipping, mercantile and importing business from a store in Macquarie Street selling this property in 1839. He was foundation director and later president of the Van Diemen's Land Bank. Though Kemp may be remembers for his early exploits in New South Wales he also played a notable pioneering role in Van Diemen's Land as grazier and merchant.
