OTTOMAN EMPIRE, mid 19th century, yataghan sword with finely forged blade of twisted steel strips in a pattern known as 'Turkish Ribbon', length of blade 53.5cm, very richly decorated with gold koftgari work and inscriptions in Arabic letters on both faces, with silver bolsters and grip strap, set with coral stones, gilded silver grips, scabbard covered fabric (later) and mounted with large, very finely chased silver locket and chape with a fish head at the tip, total length including scabbard 71cm. Traces of hammering in the blade centre and some nicks to flat back edge, otherwise very fine and a very impressive Yataghan sword.
