WWI TRENCH ART, a rifle cartridge, empty of powder and with a removable bullet, on one side of the shell casing is affixed clovers and scroll (?) at top, then vertically down is an exploding bomb, a naval anchor, and crossed cannons, and then an oak spray on a plaque which is inscribed, 'Campagne/1914-1915', the headstamp impressed on the base of the cartridge is, 'S/1/11/ (and engraved) 3'; also a casting of a crucifix (2.5x4.5cm) in blackened bronze, with suspension loop, features a skull below Christ's feet and on the reverse is the word 'MISSION' on the cross bar and at the left side is a hammer and at the other side a pair of pincers, above on the vertical beam is a crown of thorns and below is a ladder, spear, nails, a rooster atop a pole (symbolising Christ facing into the sins and dangers of the world). Fine; very good. (2)
Campagne is the name of several communes in France.
The skull on the crucifix represents Golgotha (Aramic for skull), also called Calvary, a skull-shaped hill in Jerusalem where Christ was crucified.
