BRITISH WAR MEDAL 1914-18. Chaplain J.Paterson A.I.F. Impressed. Toned, extremely fine.

John Paterson, Minister of St Andrew's Presbyterian Church at Parramatta, NSW, age 57, born 05Feb1860 at Bannockburn, Scotland and graduated from Glasgow University and The Free Church Theological Hall; Appt Assistant at the Gillespie Free Church at Airdree and afterwards to the Rev. Stryngour in Glasgow; Married Miss Jessie Jane Fairlie of Linlithgow, Scotland and they emigrated to Australia in 1893; Appt Minister at St Stephen's, Sydney briefly and then St Andrew's at Parramatta, a position he held continuously for 37 years until his retirement, preaching his last sermon on Sunday 28 June 1931; Gazetted 19Dec1902 as a Chaplain Major of 5th Brigade; applied for commission in AIF 'for voyage only' and 17May1915 appointed Chaplain 4th Class (Hon 3rd Class) and departed on Karoola 16Jun1915; RTA 04Dec1915 per Karoola; Appt terminated 06Dec1915; BWM is only WWI medal entitlement; His three sons, all born at Parramatta, Sapper William S.Paterson, Lieut Fairlie A.Paterson and Lieut Albert V.Paterson, served in the AIF with the first KIA in France and the last awarded the Military Medal.

In June 1924 Chaplain 1st Class The Rev. J.Paterson, Chaplains Dept, 2nd MD, a member of the Citizen's Forces, was presented with a Colonial Auxiliary Forces Officers' Decoration (CG No.35 24 May 1923) at Victoria Barracks by the Governor-General Lord Forster.
