VINTAGE GEORGIAN-ERA MINIATURE PORTRAIT IN OIL ON IVORY, under glass in a brass frame (51x61mm), with suspension loop, velvet backing and affixed is a handwritten ticket '(?)'s Gdfather/General Cookson. C.B./R.A.'. Extremely fine.

Together with a letter from Brigadier R.J.Lewendon (Retd), Assistant Secretary (Historical), Royal Artillery Institution, Old Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, London, 9 Jun (19)78. In this letter he gives details of Charles Norris Cookson and his history of promotions from a Gentleman Cadet on 2 December 1772 through to Lieutenant-General on 27 May 1825. He also states as regards the miniature, 'it is similar in style to other R.A. Officers we hold, or have seen. In the opinion of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London a William Wood could well be the Artist. He was a prolific miniature painter for some 30 or 40 years plus and minus of 1800. I cannot tell from the painting what rank is depicted, except that it is that of a field officer (major and above). Consequently I would hazard a guess that it was painted around 1800-1810.
