CARIAN ISLANDS. Rhodes. Ca. late 3rd-early 2nd centuries BC. AR/AE Fourrée Tetradrachm (13.79 gm; 30 mm). NGC AU (Strike 4/5 - Surface 4/5). Ancient plated forgery in the name and types of Alexander III the Great of Macedon. Hephaistion, magistrate. Head of Heracles right, wearing lion skin headdress / Zeus enthroned left, holding eagle and scepter; HF??S??O? and rose in left field, PO below throne. Cf. Price 2522 and HGC 6, 1455 for "official" issue of these types. Struck on a broad flan. A fascinating example of a forgery contemporary with the "official" Alexander issues of Asia Minor. about Uncirculated.
