Cnut (1016-1035), Penny, London, Eadwerd, 1.06g, + c•nut ex angl•, pointed helmet and draped bust left, rev. +edþer•d on lv•ndde:, voided short cross over concentric circles, pellet-filled annulets in angles (Spink 225, lot 166, same obverse die; N.787; BMC XIV; S.1158), good very fine.
provenance
Bagnall, collection dispersed by Spink (acquired 10 July 1964) - £5.10.0

Intriguingly the r of rex is omitted from this obverse die. Whilst other examples of Eadweard's issues for the reign of Cnut show greater competency in respect to die sinking, perhaps this was a more deliberate act by a disenfranchised native moneyer who disputed the legitimacy of this new Viking 'king'?
Estimate: £160 - £200
