spatharokandidatos and axiarchos. Byzantine lead seal (22 mm, 8.60 gram). 11th century AD. Half length facing bust of the Theotokos orans, with hands half-raised before chest, palms outward; MHP ΘV to left and right / MANU|HΛ CΠA|ΘAPOK,|ΔΔ S AΞ|APX in five lines. Very fine. The military rank of axiarchos is rarely found on Byzantine seals. It is an alternative spelling for taxiarchos, a commander of a small unit of 1000 infantry and archers.
