L'apothéose de Napoléon Ier by Ingres was a design that was originally to be a grand cameo produced by David in 1821. When David failed to find suitable material to carve the cameo, Ingres used the design for a ceiling in the Hôtel de Ville de Paris (Paris City Hall). This painting, along with the building itself that was burned by the Paris Commune during its final days in 1871.
