Late Roman-Celtic. Cast lead mystic plaque, 3rd-4th century AD. D/ Plaque with figural design in several scenes: arch with coiled serpents above in the upper corners; three bands of figures within the arch; Sol Invictus (Helios) in a chariot pulled by four hippocamps, with radiate crown and cloak. In the middle row, Helen facing between the Dioscuri on horseback ; soldier with spear and shield and fish below the horse to the left; figure standing and prone figure trampled by the horseman to the right. In the third row, feasting scene with diners at a table flanked by two naked attendants to right; to left, figure with zoomorphic head standing right and shepherd hanging animals from tree. In the lower row, amphora between lion and snake; fish on tripod to left; cock standing left to right. R/ Plain. PB. g. 170.00 94 x 80 mm. A superb and fascinating example, rare in this exceptional condition. Lovely grey-tan patina. A few nicks, otherwise EF.
