The artistry of this denarius hides a subtle shift in the fortunes of Nero's formidable mother, Agrippina Junior, who poisoned the emperor Claudius in order to gain power through her son, only to lose influence and, ultimately, her life. Coins of Nero's first year (AD 54) show confronted busts of the young emperor and his mother, but Agrippina's name appears on the obverse, with Nero's name and titles relegated to the reverse. This denarius, from Nero's second year, shows their busts jugate, with Nero in the foreground (the position of honor), eclipsing his mother, and names Nero on the obverse while demoting Agrippina's name to the reverse. The reverse design honors Divus Claudius by associating him with Divus Augustus.
