Great Britain
Victoria copper Proof Pattern 5 Cents (Penny) 1846 PR64 Brown PCGS, Peck-2081 (VR). By Marrian & Gausby. Plain edge, coin rotation. A very rare pattern of Penny size for a suggested decimal coinage (a popular numismatic debate in the 1840s), from a set dated 1846 which never came to be. Although restrikes exist, Peck claims that coins such as this specimen with coin-rotation die alignment are all originals dating to 1846. Compared to Wyon's contemporary portrait of Victoria, the obverse on this piece is rather bullish and harsh yet retaining high technical skill, every detail razor-sharp and fully rendered. The centers are the darkest mahogany in color yet exhibiting a bold aqua-blue tone, whilst the outer rings are a subdued butterscotch with a light 'machined' texture. Seldom offered in any grade let alone as fine as this, a wonderful piece of British numismatic history.
