Apollo Actius is honoured by Augustus in this reverse type as part of the commemorations of his great victory at the Battle of Actium, where an ancient temple dedicated to Apollo overlooked the sea. Augustus had the temple enlarged and renovated as an expression of his gratitude; on the spot where Octavian's own tent had been pitched he built a monument adorned with the beaks of the captured galleys, and in further celebration of his victory he instituted the Actian games in honour of Apollo Actius.
