Ionia, Ephesus, gold stater, 126/125 BC, diademed head of Artemis right, quiver at shoulder, rev., Ε-Φ, cultus statue of Artemis of Ephesus flanked by small figures of a stag and a bee; to left, Θ (year 9), 8.15g (sic), die axis 1.00 (G K Jenkins, Hellenistic Gold Coins of Ephesos in Festschrift for Prof. E. Akurgas, 1987, pp. 183-188, no. 8, citing this example; Gulbenkian 985, same dies and citing this example), one minor edge scrape, good very fine and extremely rare, possibly only the second known specimen of this year, the other recorded example being in the Gulbenkian collection. Provenance: Bank Leu 18, 5 May 1977, lot 188. With a weight of 8.15g it is lighter than the Gulbenkian example at 8.30g but there are no signs of clipping to the edge.
