Popayan, Colombia, 10 pesos, 1870, extremely rare (four known), PCGS AU 58, finest known in PCGS census. Sed-40; Restrepo-332.8; KM-141.3. Deeply purple-toned and almost totally devoid of wear but with typically crude rims and with diagnostic die-crack from forehead to rim, also with date punched over stars and with some over-punched letters as well. Key date in the series, rated RRRR by Dr. Frank Sedwick and called "rare" by Restrepo, who states only two or three are known. Of those, the Eldorado coin is AU55 (Stack's Bowers, January 2018) and the other was an unslabbed AU (our Auction 12, October 2012, touted as "First and only specimen ever offered at auction"). One other specimen is known: the Banco de la Republic example plated in Restrepo. None are slabbed by NGC. Of the four known, the present lot appears to have the best strike, with (for example) full details in the pomegranate. PCGS #36323676.
($7000-10000)
