Tegucigalpa, Honduras, 10 pesos, 1883, rare, NGC AU 50. KM-58; Fr-5. Brassy yellow color, minor hairlines but no wear (begging for a higher grade), bold strike for the period. This type is considered among the rarest gold issues of Latin America, with only fifteen specimens known, thirteen of which (including this coin) came from an "arras" (wedding dowry) that entered the numismatic market in the early 2000s. Curiously, Honduran records indicate no regular-issue gold coins were officially struck until 1888, so it is believed the present coin was struck after the stated date of 1883. A previous cataloger referred to this specimen as "borderline Mint State... one of the nicer coins from the group of 13... an essentially uncollectible and unknown type [that] is now extremely rare and desirable." NGC #3234847-001.
