Great Britain, large silver medal, 1687, James II, recovery of treasure from the Concepcion by Sir William Phips. Betts-67. 54mm, 65.51 grams. Busts of king and queen inside legend . IACOBUS . II . ET . MARIA . D. G. MAG . BRI . FRAN . ET . HIB . REX . ET . REGINA on obverse, reverse with salvage scene below legend . SEMPER TIBI PENDEAT HAMUS ., with NAVFRAGA REPERTA in exergue, engraver George Bower. A very famous and important medal, both for British medal collectors (who refer to it as the "Recovery of Treasure at St. Domingo" medal) and American historians, but also for the growing legions of shipwreck enthusiasts, as this piece was commissioned in commemoration for the salvage of the Spanish ship Concepcion (sunk in 1641 off Hispaniola) by New Englander Sir William Phips using silver actually recovered from the wreck. Lustrous AU with very light toning, some marks in fields and the inevitable hairlines from polishing but overall one of the best we have seen.
($2500-3750)
