Madrid, Spain, large silver medal, 1762, capture of Morro Castle in Havana, Cuba, very rare. Betts-443 (but in silver). 50mm, 66.79 grams. Busts of Louis de Velasco and Vincenzo Gonzalez inside legend LVDOVICO DE VELASCO ET VINCENTIO GONZALEZ with engraver PRIETO (Tomas Francisco Prieto) below on obverse, reverse with scene of Morro Castle exploding under IN . MORRO . VIT . GLOR . FUNCT ., with ARTIVM ACADEMIA / CAROLO REGE CATHOL / ANNVENTE CONS . / A . MDCCLXIII in exergue. Attractively toned AXF with only minor bumps and marks, popular issue among Spanish and Cuban collectors but also among British and U.S. collectors as indirectly commemorating a British victory (from the perspective of the vanquished) fought mostly by American colonists during the French and Indian War, by way of immortalizing the deaths (at Morro Castle) of the two Spanish officers pictured on the obverse.
