German copperplate engraving by Theodore de Bry showing a battle between Christopher Columbus and Francisco Porras (both named in the picture), from America, 4th book (1594), hand colored. 12-1/2" x 7-3/4" (image 7-1/8" x 6-1/8"). A scene from Columbus' fourth voyage to America, with Columbus engaged in battle against Francisco Poraz (or Porras) who, along with his brother, led an insurrection on the island of Jamaica where they had all been marooned, as three Indians in a wooden dugout in the foreground despair about what to do. Typical well-executed drawing with colorful hand painting, one small tear at bottom left which does not affect the image.
($500-1000)
