German copperplate engraving by Theodore de Bry showing the Spanish seizing native leaders and threatening to burn them if they do not provide enough gold, from America, 5th book (1595), hand colored. 12-1/2" x 8-3/4" (image 7-3/8" x 5-7/8"). Rendering of misery from the Spanish conquest of Peru in which a Spanish governor extorts gold from natives wearing neck chains while others try to pacify him with a gold carafe and many fanciful gold animal statues; a large fire burns outside. Staining to bottom right side which does not affect the image, good condition and coloring.
