German copperplate engraving by Theodore de Bry showing Francis Drake being crowned by a native ruler, probably from America (8th book?), ca. 1600, hand colored. 12-1/2" x 8-1/2" (image 6-7/8" x 5-7/8"). Still-bold colors highlight this preposterous rendering of Francis Drake being crowned by the Miwok king in California with Drake's ships sitting just offshore. The Indians are depicted as naked, dancing heathens living in teepees. Thin paper with foxing and staining, a few small holes in upper right none of which affects the image.
