German copperplate engraving by Theodore de Bry showing Francis Drake encountering natives around the Rio de la Plata, from America, 8th book, 1st part (1600), hand colored. 12-5/8" x 7-1/2" (image 7" x 5-1/8"). Fanciful depiction of encounter between Francis Drake and his men with Brazilian natives from the Rio de la Plata area. The natives have stolen Drake's top hat along with that of another gentleman in the group. Natives are dancing and standing with bows and arrows, scarcely aware of their impending doom. Well-colored image with small tear at bottom of page not affecting the image.
