German copperplate engraving by Theodore de Bry showing natives working the mine inside the mountain of Potosi, from America, 9th book, 1st part (1601), hand colored. 12-1/2" x 8-1/2" (image 7-3/8" x 5-3/4"). Important depiction of the Potosi mining operation using slave labor in cutaway view of the mountain to show naked natives with candles descending and ascending rope ladders, chiseling away with pickaxes, and collecting rocks. Lightly colored image in good condition with some foxing, small tear and burn mark at bottom not affecting the image.
