French copperplate-engraved map of Hispaniola (St. Domingue) by Rigobert Bonne titled "Carte de L'Isle de St. Domingue une des Grandes Antilles Colonie Francoise et Espagnole," 1770 (Paris), hand colored. 14-1/2" x 10" (image size 11-1/2" x 8"). The recorded history of the Dominican Republic began when Christopher Columbus reached the island on his first voyage, in December 1492 and promptly claimed the island for the Spanish Crown, naming it La Isla Espanola ("the Spanish Island"), later Latinized to Hispaniola. Saint-Domingue was a French colony on the western half of Hispaniola from 1659 to 1804, in what is now Haiti and is denoted on this map as "Partie Francoise." The eastern part was Spanish or "Partie Espagnole." It's interesting to note that this 18th-century map, being of French origin, refers to the island as "St. Domingue" and not as "Hispaniola." Map view includes tip of Cuba as well as Turks & Caicos Islands. From Rigobert Bonne's famous Atlas de toutes les parties connues du Globe Terrestre (1770), Paris. Rigobert Bonne (1727-1795) was one of the most important cartographers of the late 18th century and succeeded Jacques Nicolas Bellin as royal cartographer to France in 1773. Nicely hand colored on fine period handmade laid paper containing a French watermark and centerfold as issued; small remnant of archival tape on back from previous mounting.
