Section (four links) of ornate gold "money" chain, 6.44 grams, ex-Atocha (1622). 1-3/4" long, each link about 1/2". Four intact links of alternating cruciform cross-section and spiral-twist, a design that was popular in its time for use as tax-free money, since jewelry was exempt from the heavy tax that applied to coins and ingots, this four-link span therefore not simply part of a broken bigger chain so much as the equivalent of a 2 escudos coin, with several patches of white coral adhering and desirable original tag and certificate. From the Atocha (1622), with original Fisher plastic tag and photo-certificate #1013.
