Civil War-period Confederate 12-pounder "canister" shot, ex-Cheatham. 550 grams, 5" tall, 4-1/2" diameter. Among the most effective anti-personnel ammunition during the Civil War was the "canister" shot, a cylindrical stack of about 28 small balls or grapeshot with metal plates on either end, which, when shot from a cannon, would spread out and hit targets over a wide area. These items are rare today, especially more or less intact like this one, unconserved but stable, missing the cover from one side so you can see the shot inside. Found in Virginia. Pedigreed to the collection of Major Ken Cheatham (USAF, ret.), who was involved in the trial against the Marcos family of the Philippines in the 1990s.
($350-500)
