Rare early German Westerwald stoneware ewer jug with winged-lion decoration, 1600s-early 1700s. 2232 grams, 13" tall, 6-1/2" diameter. Early salt-glazed gray pottery with cobalt details, these stoneware jugs hail from the Westerwald region of Rhineland, Germany (in the area of Hohr-Grenzhausen) and were exported to England and the colonies in colonial times. The turned-body jug features ornate decorations in deep cobalt blue with heraldic imagery and symbols including a coat of arms, faces, and lion masks and stamped throughout with leaves, quatrefoils and medallions. Tiny chip on attached base with age cracking at seam. From an East Yorkshire country estate. With photo-certificate.
