Atocha gold "finger" bar #33, 622 grams, marked with fineness XX-dot (20-1/4K) three times, foundry / owner SARGOSA / PECARTA and seven tax stamps, ex-Atocha (1622). 7" x 1" x 3/4". A neat, flat, and slightly curved bar with both ends sharply cut, the top of which shows a multitude (seven) of partial circular tax stamps plus three fineness markings (each consisting of two X's in a box topped with a dot inside a circle), probably to facilitate cutting into smaller pieces that each would show the official markings. The explicit cartouche SARGOSA / PECARTA, which only appears once, refers to the foundry at the mine (and city) of Zaragoza in Colombia and possibly the name of the assayer or owner (PECARTA). On the bottom of the bar is a scratched in number "A85" followed by "33" in black ink (Fisher numbers). From the Atocha (1622), with Fisher photo-certificate #85A-1576-1 and pedigreed to our Auction #6 (lot #1624).
($25000-50000)
