Plowman-CM5.1. 16.20 grams, 1-1/4" Engraved by famous French medalist Louis-Oscar Roty and issued to those who had purchased a certain amount of French Canal Company stock. Obverse: woman bringing together personifications of the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, lighthouses and steamers in background, fish and drafting tools at bottom, legend above reads PERCEMENT DE L'ISTHME DE PANAMA; reverse: CANAL / DE PANAMA / COMPAGNIE UNIVERSELLE / DE CANAL INTEROCEANIQUE / 7 8 ET 9 DECEMBRE 1880 / A SES SOUSCRIPTEURS / LA BANQUE / PARISIENNE. Darkly toned XF+ with a few minor rim nicks. Pedigreed to the Isaac Rudman collection.
