Lot of 30 German East Africa brass 20 heller, 1916-T, all NGC genuine. KM-15a. The SMS Konigsberg (laid down on January 12, 1905) was a German light cruiser that served in the High Seas Fleet prior to World War I. After the outbreak of hostilities, the ship was stationed in German East Africa where it sank the British cruiser HMS Pegasus. While conducting repairs in the supposed safety of the Rufiji River, the Konigsberg was blockaded and then attacked by two British monitors. She was damaged enough that the crew scuttled the ship on July 11, 1915 after salvaging the main guns. Further salvage removed machinery used to set up a provisional mint in 1916 at Tabora. There, 20 hellers were struck using brass from spent shell casings and copper from salvaged ship's pipes. Minting continued until the capture of Tabora by the Belgian army. Typical crude appearance yet complete, all with some circulation and toning, a number of different varieties here. Recovered from: SMS Konigsberg, sunk in 1915 in the Rufiji River, Tanzania, Africa
