IAM GERMANIA PLAUDE around scene of Blanchard in his balloon and gondola with two flags, above cityscape of Frankfurt viewed from the west with a bridge across the river Main, MDCCLXXXV in exergue, VF. François Blanchard (1738-1809), the noted French aeronaut, made his first ascent in 1784. He crossed the Channel from Dover to Calais in 1785, made over 50 ascents throughout Europe, and later visited the U.S.A.
