Montenegro Medal for Zeal 1895
Circular silver medal with laterally-pierced cylinder and hinged bar suspension; the face with the youthful head of Prince (later King) Nicholas I of Montenegro circumscribed 'НИКОЛА I. КЊАЗ ЦРНОГОРСКИ' (Nicholas I. Prince of Montenegro); the reverse inscribed 'ЗА РЕВНОСТ' (For Zeal) within a wreath of oak and laurel; light age toning; maker's mark 'JC' (for Josef Christlbauer of Vienna) on the edge; on possibly original ribbon. The medal was instituted in 1895 to be awarded to staff of the Royal Household and other high-ranking individuals for exemplary service to the state and was the first civilian award to be issued by Montenegro. The design of the face of the medal and its size (31mm) is identical to that of the 1862 medal for bravery and it is very likely that, initially at least, the same die was used. This is an early example dating from before 1914; during World War I Montenegro found itself at war with Austria and later examples of the medal were made in Paris and in London rather than Vienna. The medal was suppressed in 1918 when Montenegro was subsumed into what became Yugoslavia.
