L. Farsuleius Mensor. 76 BC. AR Denarius (18.5mm, 3.93 g, 6h). Rome mint. Diademed and draped bust of Libertas right; LXVI above pileus to left, S • C below chin / Roma in biga, holding spear and reins, assisting togate figure into chariot; scorpion below horses. Crawford 392/1a; Sydenham 789a; Farsuleia 1; Type as RBW 1430. EF, deeply toned with some iridescence.

From the Andrew McCabe Collection. Ex Numismatica Ars Classica 84, Part II (21 May 2015), lot 1662.

The format of the control mark, apparently LXVI with a bar connecting the top of VI, can be compared with other examples in CNR (Banti) that similarly have a bar connecting the top of VII, VIII, etc. Perhaps it was a means of ensuring the trailing I's did not get lost in the coin design.
