The Pompeians. Sextus Pompey. 40-39 BC. AR Denarius (21mm, 3.64 g, 4h). Uncertain Sicilian mint. Bare head of Pompey the Great right; capis to left, lituus to right / Neptune, naked but for chlamys on left arm, holding apluster and resting right foot on prow, standing left between the Catanaean brothers Anapias and Amphinomus running in opposite directions, bearing their parents on their shoulders. Crawford 511/3b; CRI 334a; Sydenham 1345; RSC 18 (Pompey the Great); RBW 1785 var. (rev. legend). Good VF, iridescent toning. Struck on a large flan with good detail.
