A. Licinius Nerva (47 BC). AR denarius (17mm, 3.53 gm, 10h). About XF, roughness. Rome. NERVA behind, FIDES before, laureate head of Fides right / A LICI[NIVS] below, III - V[IR] across field, one-armed horseman galloping right, dragging captive, holding shield and sword, by the hair. Crawford 454/1. Sydenham 954a. Licinia 24a.

From the Morris Collection

The significance of this interesting reverse type portraying a one-armed soldier dragging a captive by the hair presumably relates to a famous exploit of one of the moneyer's ancestors. However, the story is unfortunately lost to us. The choice of Fides, the personification of good faith, loyalty and trustworthiness, as obverse type most likely relates to the reverse, and is particularly noteworthy for being the only instance where she appears on Republican coinage.
