Nero (AD 54-68). AE as (28mm, 9.56 gm, 6h). NGC Fine, 4/5 - 3/5, countermark. Lugdunum, AD 64-67. IMP NERO CAESAR AVG P MAX TR P P P, bare head of Nero right, globe at point of truncation; SPQR countermark across neck / Victory flying left, holding shield inscribed S P Q R. RIC I 543.

This rare countermark is found almost exclusively on Nero's asses placed horizontally on the neck of the portrait. It was applied in Gallia Lugdunensis, either by the administration of Julius Vindex, during his revolt, or that of Galba, between March and June of AD 68.
