Commodus (AD 177-192). AE sestertius (28mm, 23.17 gm, 6h). VF. Rome, AD 185. M COMMODVS ANT ON AVG PIVS BRIT, laureate head right / P M TR P X IMP VII COS IIII P P, Victory seated right on shields, holding long stylus, preparing to inscribe shield set on knee; S-C across fields; VICT BRIT in exergue. RIC III 452.

From the Morris Collection.

The Victory over Britain series is unusual in that it breaks convention and announces the victory in the exergue rather than having the victory already inscribed on a shield. In addition to Britain, both Commodus and his father, Marcus Aurelius, issued sestertii for victories over Germany and Parthia which featured shields inscribed VICT GER and VICT PAR but the shield for Britain is not yet inscribed. The series seems to be based on the sestertii issued 80 years earlier, by Trajan, declaring victory over Dacia which featured Victory preparing a shield inscribed VICT DAC.
