Thrace, Pautalia. Caracalla. As Caesar, A.D. 196-198. AE 19 trihemiassarion (18.6 mm, 3.86 g, 6 h). [AV K MA] ANTΩN, bearded, laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Caracalla right / OVΛΠIAC [ΠAVTA]ΛIAC, two serpents standing erect and facing each other to left and right of short altar on which is an egg. Varbanov 4976; Ruzicka --; Moushmov --. Near VF, scant legends, dark, rough patina. presumably very rare .

From the Tom Buggey Collection.

The former owner, Tom Buggey, identified this as Caracalla, although the portrait does tend to favor Septimius - the obverse may be from a hastily reworked die of Septimius Severus. The reverse is a die match. Tom Buggey thought it was from Nikopolis ad Istrum, Moesia, although the only instance of this reverse which was possible to find is a die match on a nearly unpublished coin of Septimius Severus from Pautalia, Thrace sold in 2015 by Numismatik Naumann. No other coin with two erect serpents flanking an altar was found in a deep and wide search.
