Diodotos II was elevated to a position of joint rule with his father Diodotos I around the time of the succession of Seleukos II in Syria. Under his reign, Baktria formalised its secession from the Seleukid Empire, and Baktrian issues struck in the name of Antiochos II ceased to be minted, and were replaced with coins bearing the name of Diodotos.
