Civil War, Vindex AR Denarius. Uncertain mint in Gaul, AD 68. CAESAR [AVGV]STVS, laureate (or oak wreathed?) head of Augustus to right / DIVVS IVLIVS, comet of eight rays with tail upward. Nicolas A8; BMC p.301, 49-50; RIC 92; Martin A10. 3.31g, 17mm, 7h.
Near Very Fine. Extremely Rare.
From a private European collection.
This denarius, along with other Augustus types, is recognised as having been struck during the uprising of Vindex primarily from their weight and unusual style. Whereas the denarii struck during Augustus' lifetime were made to a standard of approximately 3.8g, Neronian denarii were closer to 3.5g, this weight continuing in use through the Civil War.
